- In cats, amino acids rather than glucose trigger insulin release. The very low content of carbohydrates and the high content of protein reduce hyperglycemia in cats with diabetes mellitus and support diabetic remission. Carbohydrate sources with a low glycemic index promote the gradual release of glucose from the diet to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia.
- Uniquely high levels of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and krill. Diabetes is associated with increased levels of inflammatory mediators, reduced insulin sensitivity, and reduced immune status. Omega-3 fatty acids provide precursors for the production of mediators for support of the natural anti-inflammatory process, support the immune status, and can help to increase insulin sensitivity
- Diabetes and pancreatitis are closely related in cats and hypertriglyceridemia in diabetes can induce or aggravate pancreatitis. The moderate dietary level of fat and relatively high levels of omega-3 fatty acids can support normal levels of triglycerides and thereby provide nutritional support for cats with pancreatitis.
- Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans can bind to macrophages and alert the immune system, thereby supporting immune response altering natural cytokine production, and help in maintaining glycemic control
- Diabetes mellitus is associated with oxidative stress, which is involved in the development of diabetic complications. High dietary levels of antioxidant substances, such as vitamins A, and E and fruit extracts help to neutralize the reactive oxygen species.
